Battle/Art Therapy

Can't write a blog about battle without mentioning the zombie apocalypse craze of the Walking Dead! In fact, all types of apocalyptic battle TV shows and movies are popular.  We've even seen a rise in real people planning for the end of the world as we know it on National Geographic's "Doomsday Preppers". Many are actually preparing for battle stocking up on weapons to protect their families and food supply.  There are websites that sell Doomsday gear and weapons to get you ready! Of course, with the state of our environment and world today it's easy to conceive how we are leaping into "The End is Near" scenarios.  We also know this isn't a new idea remembering Revelations in the Bible and the "Left Behind" series.

Last year our family faced a real battle when I was diagnosed with cancer.  I was treated with Chemotherapy through out the year with William as my caregiver.  He took on a majority of the housework, cooking, and taking care of the kids.  Every other week he dealt with unmentionable conditions from the side effects he witnessed of my chemotherapy.  Some situations a husband shouldn't have to see his wife suffer through.  There were many weeks that our family stayed home watching me lay sick in bed that should have been times enjoying summer FUN!  Unfortunately, we never got to participate in "Cancer Preppers" before hand to prepare for the worst of days.

So what does this have to do with William Kimmons Art?  It is how William was able to endure being my caregiver.  He prepared for the battle against cancer we were fighting as a family at home by making ART.  Yes, he prescribed himself some good ole' Art Therapy during my chemotherapy.

Art Therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person's physical, mental, and emotional wellness.  Art Therapist is a profession held in the therapeutic field of medicine as well.  There are stories of art therapy helping victims of many forms of illness and especially victims of abuse.  Art therapy coloring books are used as an approach to treat children.  Art has become an essential part of therapy used in assessment and treatment techniques.

In closing, I hope we NEVER have to use these for anything but the purpose of ART!

Being Normal/Unhinged Mind

Coming from a background in art, meeting William he was seemingly normal having ideas that were common in my appreciation of appealing paintings, sculptures, and drawings.  I've made an effort to help him share many of his pieces that can be looked at with a pleasant perception.

As humans our love of animals is shared universally.  Art and other forms of entertainment that represent sweet little critters just makes us feel good.  Our enjoyment of cuteness is one that Disney and other movie makers capitalize on capturing the attention of kids and adults alike.  Tons of precious kitten and puppy videos are shared and "liked" all over the internet everyday.  We can't get enough!

We also see great beauty in colorful images of nature like flowers and trees.  We place value on certain works that express and bring forth warm fuzzy feelings for us.

However, there are times that I'm snapped into another realm with unsettled feelings by the finding of one of William's works in progress!

LIKE THIS ONE:

Disclaimer:  While this may look like the beginning of a creation of a unhinged mind, I still think (hope) William is normal.

But then again, there's this:

And let's not forget this:

Of course, if you are like me and have great memories of watching Mad Max with your Dad this one is absolutely delightful!

Click the link below to see what's coming to theaters soon!

So yes, movie makers also figured out how to take advantage of those alarming feelings we get from images wavering on unhinged.

Please know this blog was written by William's wife (that's me) all in FUN!

If you enjoy visiting and seeing some of the pieces, please follow William Kimmons Art on Facebook and check back for updates!

Thanks!

Exhibit

Two of William Kimmons Art works will be on display during the St. Louis Business Expo at the Valley Park Welding Exhibit.

One is custom made signage created for Valley Park Welding and demonstrates the excellent work the business produces.

The other can been found in the left hand corner of the pic and is a piece William named "Gear Freak" inspired by recycled tractor parts creating a look of mechanical gear apparatus motion. It contains a mix of steam punk, industrial, and fantasy art.

A tidbit about Fantasy art:

Fantasy art based on classic mythology has been a staple of European art since the Renaissance period.  Today there is a rise in the popularity of fantasy art based on modern mythology such as JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth including the recent "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" movies inspired by the books.  Fantastic creatures including dragons are some of the Kimmons household favorites!
Thanks for joining us again and we will continue to keep you posted at William Kimmons Art page on Face Book.  Don't forget to "Like" and "Share" us with your friends as well!

Starving Artist

So William is not a "starving artist" because he is a welder by trade, but the term sure resonates when thinking about selling his work.  As an artist being asked "how much" can bring on some strong emotions (our artists friends will understand).  I've seen William struggle with giving a "dollar sign" to his sculptures because he has an emotional attachment to the pieces.  Those emotions come from the creative process put into each piece and in Williams words "the scrap metal calling to be transformed".  Of course a desire to sell his work and share it with others is always present, but there is a different scale of feelings to a sale of a piece with meaning for the artist.

As we grow in our attempt to share the work it is our intention to have an art show where each piece will be presented with dimensions, descriptions, and prices.  A lot of work and time need to be put into creating the event (including some red tape).   We are hoping to make it an unique experience for attendees sharing as many of William's pieces as possible and inviting other artists to show work as well.  We don't know where this path will lead, but are ready for the adventure to explore the world of art through this door. It is only in the very EARLY stages of happening and could take a really long time to pull it all together (possibly 2016).

Until then, we hope you enjoy our updates in this blog and on the face book page William Kimmons Art.

The Owl

Sculptures by artist William Kimmons primarily use recycled scrap metals. Occasionally he incorporates other materials as inspired by works.

This piece was influenced by the sightings and sounds of owls in the surrounding wooded area of Ceder Hill Missouri where William spent years growing up and exploring. He has a great love of the outdoors and nature that is incorporated into his work.

The legs are discarded metal springs and give the owl a slight motion causing a live industrial feel.

The side view delivers resemblance to another feathered creature.

The back view and end leaving you with a couple of Owl facts:
  1. "Owls can rotate their heads and necks as much as 270 degrees. Owls have fourteen neck vertebrae as compared to 7 in humans which makes their necks more flexible."

This is a pic of an owl on the mailboxes where William grew up captured by his mother Geri Kimmons this year.  As you can see it did not show off it's "fourteen neck vertebrae" with a 270 degree turn towards the camera!

Hope you enjoyed the first explanation and viewing of a piece of William Kimmons art.  Please come back and also "like" and "share" us on facebook.
